Flotsam and Jetsam

As a busy city kid, I never had the chance to travel the wonders of the Philippines. Aside from the streak of concretes the local capital had to offer, I only had the luxury to look at worn-out bridges that offered a swell view of the “dirty”rivers of Manila—a sight to behold, undoubtedly. But in the beach sense, all these circumstances were washed away by the relaxing vibe of San Juan, La Union. And not just any chill vibe, we’re talking about Flotsam and Jetsam.

It’s funny how I’ve been out of the country five times but I haven’t had the energy to travel here in my own localities. So it was time to redeem myself by taking the first big leap of travelling with Arnie to La Union. As a first timer, a mix of nervousness and excitement was in order. We traveled in the dead of the night in the hopes of getting to our destination with good graces—oh, we battled through an ongoing storm, by the way.

Lo’ and behold, as if the universe was plotting our path, we arrived at Surf Town safely—and with no storm in our midst! With a quick shut-eye, we counted the time as paradise was just minutes away.

Flotsam and Jetsam is one of the most interesting hostel I’ve been to. You can tell just by looking at the structure and details of the place. Painted with a quirky rush of colors and mind-blown DIYs, this place will definitely transport you to an imaginarium with a relaxing beach as its icing on top.

Let me tell you, but this is one of the cleanest beaches I've been to. The community here is keen when it comes to keeping the place well-preserved. not to mention, Flotsam and Jetsam makes it a point that cleanliness in their facilities is of utmost importance. I applaud how the public restrooms are really poop-friendly-- just how I like it.

Services are quite the treat as we were given free breakfast at the kitchen bar—literally, a breakfast by the beach. Much to my delight, the breakfast bar offers pretty much what I want when it comes to places like this. Simple yet hearty.

The kitchen bar also serves the famous Macai Bowls. They come in different variations depending on the ingredients used. It definitely lived up to its reputation because I really enjoyed eating it. I didn't expect it to taste so soothing and delicious. You guys should definitely try it!

When I mean about having the time of your life relaxing, please refer to this cat I spotted lounging around the kitchen bar. It definitely says a lot about the quality of comfort here.

Flotsam and Jetsam is a wonderful place to unwind. What started out a small Kubo became a haven for locals and tourists to swim, socialize, and to relax. There are no strangers in this hostel since the place reflects what it means to go soul-searching and to have a good time. So in general, the hostel offers pretty much everything you need when you want a place to stay.

We were given the Sea View Queen with Day Bed. It was probably the best room in Flotsam and Jetsam because you're given a fantastic view of the beach. But aside from Sea View Queen with Day Bed, the hostel also has numerous rooms that cater to the vacation soul. Each one has their unique set-up.

Check out our room and the view!

Night life at the Kitchen Bar is up and running when the sun finally goes down. People gather at the bar to have a good time. Even the usual locals at La Union still travel to Flotsam and Jetsam to eat, commune, and to drink. With an awesome playlist for their tropical arsenal, the Kitchen Bar is complemented well with DIY designs that truly speak to the vibe of the place.

We had a fantastic time enjoying the night life at surf town, everything was just extremely laid back. Not to mention, the food and drinks were as excellent as the accommodation.

We had Margherita Pizza, Chicken Wings, Onion Rings, and a couple of drinks like Alien Grenade before trying out the bar's famous (Jeff Ortega's) 5-minute drink. A 5-minute swig from it will have you knocked out, literally.

Overall, the atmosphere at the bar was the much needed break from the energetic bar scene of manila-- everyone was relaxed and just enjoying each other's company over food and drinks.

On our second day, it was time to explore the surfing culture of La Union. Like the name of the place, Surf Town has one of the best waves here in the Philippines. People always have a go at the surfing lessons to have the tourist experience.  If you're not into surfing then the beach is still there to keep you fully entertained.

I've always admired how skilled surfers manage to keep their balance on their boards. Maybe one day I'll get to try out this out on a more serious endeavor. We'll be back for more lessons soon!

My adventure at Flotsam and Jetsam was by far the best mini vacation I've had in years. It's one of those places that make you feel alive and rested at the same time. From the waves, to the company, to the culture, it's definitely an immersive experience that makes the soul recover.

If you want to have an amazing time with the beaches, coupled with a laid back crowd, and a solid place to eat and sleep, then better head on over to Flotsam and Jetsam. Warning, major "sea-panx" might happen once you leave. Take it from me.
